I saw Petty and Bob Dylan at my first Dead show, that was the 4th of July, 1986 at Rich Stadium. The Dead opened that show. But I saw lots of other bands at the Centrum. And all my other Dead shows were at the Boston Garden. Looking back, I could have seen them at the Centrum and some other places nearby to wherever I was through the years - best not to look back. (coulda woulda shoulda) thankfully the music is still alive here to hear, and here in my heart.

"out on the road today I saw a Deadhead sticker on a Caddilac
a little voice inside my head said don't look back, you can never look back"

Ok, since you were at that Rich Stadium show I have a question for you. When I first started coming to this site I put something harmless in a review for that gig that indicated it was hot when the show started and then a storm came in during the break and the band opened up set 2 with Cold rain and Snow because it was raining and windy coming in off the lake. A bunch of folks responded and said I was crazy and I must have been at the wrong gig. I was 16 at the time and with my uncle so I was not under any substances. What do you remember about that? Am I thinking of something else?

I was there, but don’t recall much about it. Your question made me check out various reviews here and elsewhere and it is quite funny how much folks disagree about whether it rained or not!
Interesting start to the second set anyway – Cold Rain > Fire > Samson.

I always refer to this video but still get flak. Definitely not "hot" at this point of the day. You can see the light swinging and the equipment doors on the side of the stage blowing open.

I downloaded the whole video (I think only set II- and pretty good quality) a couple years ago, but can't remember where... I like having a vid of my first show.

About the heat, Hell yeah it was hot. My girlfriend and I drove from UMass and stayed at a hotel the night before I figured about an hour away, but left it a bit late to leave for the show and got caught in traffic. A huge traffic jam coming to the show I guess, miles out of sight. And hot. We missed the first set - Damn! I had been so psyched about going to my first show, and when I bought tickets (that is another story..) I got six, because some friends from UMass were coming too. They all backed out. I was stuck with 4 extras and very naive about the scalpers. Walking up to the stadium was amazing seeing all the Deadheads everywhere. So different to all the other rock fans from many other concerts I'd gone to in the past 3 years. Well, some guy started shouting, I need extra tickets, who has any extras?? So i said hey, I've got 4 extra tickets. He said, You'll never sell them, the show's not even sold out and they're selling them at the door, so you might as well just give them to me, some of my friends need them. I gave them all 4 to him, a cost of nearly 80-100 bucks! A girl saw this and said do you have any more?? I said no and she said "you shouldn't have given them to him, He'll just sell them for over-priced, it's sold out- he's a scalper. I'd have paid you face value for those tickets, we need tickets couldn't get any" Big lesson learned there. There is a story about the before and after, and maybe one of these days I'll share. But the cool part about after, was we camped in our tent at Niagara Falls. The hot part, I can't really remember any rain, unless it was a small shower or sprinkle. Maybe it had rained while we were in the traffic jam in the shelter of the car. Not sure. But we got inside the stadium just as Cold Rain and Snow was starting. We made our way across the field and I enjoyed the dancing vibe down there, but my girlfriend wasn't comfortable with all the different-looking people, some on possibly a lot of drugs. She was a very straight girl and a little freaked out by it all. I was ready to join the party, but I wanted to look after her the best I could, so we crossed the field, and up the stands to our seats near the top of the stadium, about 20 rows from the top, a 1/3rd of the way back from stage, Jerry's side.

So, in short, I don't remember much rain, unless it was a quick shower, and forgot it as soon as I got into the show.
